When cancer progresses, cancerous cells are able to travel through blood vessels and lymph ducts to other parts of the body. This process is known as metastatic spread.
In cases of metastatic cancer, systemic treatment of all areas where the disease is present must be administered.
This involves using specific medicines for each type of cancer. These medicines interfere with the processes which create cancerous cells, and are thus more efficient and less toxic. Our centre participates in numerous clinical trials, giving patients the opportunity to receive treatment with new drugs.
Radiotherapy also plays a crucial role in advanced disease and is a very useful tool for local growth control and alleviation of symptoms. These days, there is ample evidence to suggest that, in certain cases, the removal of metastasis is a potentially curative treatment. Therefore, our patients are carefully evaluated by our surgical team in order to select the best possible treatment.
