Dr Rafael Rosell honored with Hamilton Fairley Award from European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO)

Barcelona 24 September 2011 - Dr Rafael Rosell has been awarded the Hamilton Fairley prize by ESMO in recognition of his numerous contributions to medical and translational oncology throughout his long career. Dr Rosell gave a short presentation during the award ceremony which took place during the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress (EMCC). He is one of just three eminent European oncologists honored by ESMO this year for their important contributions to research, clinical practice and improving cancer treatment. The other oncologists to receive awards were Pr. Johann de Bono of the Cancer Research Institute, U.K (ESMO Award) and Pr. Hans Jörg Senn of the Tumor & Breast Centre ZeTuP, Switzerland (ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award).

“The Hamilton Fairley Award for 2011 has been awarded to Prof Rafael Rosell of the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Badalona, Spain. Professor Rosell is a leading figure in the field of lung  cancer, who established a productive group of clinical and laboratory investigators in the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital Trias i Pujol, which has become one of the leading centers in lung cancer management.



“Prof Rosell’s contributions range from tumor biology and prognostic and treatment-predictive markers, to clinical trials involving chemotherapy and targeted agents with careful dedication to personalized medicine,” said Prof Tabernero.



The Hamilton Fairley Award commemorates one of the founding fathers of Medical Oncology in Europe and is presented to candidates who are internationally recognized for lifetime achievements in science and clinical/laboratory research.



“Nowadays, clinical achievements are basically propelled by translational research and therefore this award is a recognition of a multidisciplinary effort,” Prof Rosell said. “It is a great honor for me to receive this award, but more importantly, I believe that the award is a recognition of the collective group of clinical and laboratory investigators, as well as statisticians and other key persons involved.”



The European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress, jointly organized by the European Society for Medical Oncology and the European Cancer Organization, is attended by key international investigators in from a range of oncology fields and this year was held from 23-27 September 2011 in Stockholm, Sweden.
